What the resume parser extracts

Every CV is returned with the same field names, whatever its layout or language, so the result can be read by a person or imported by software.

  • Contact details

Full name, first and last name, email, phone number, LinkedIn and GitHub URLs, plus other links found in the CV.

  • Location

City, region, country with its ISO code, postal code and coordinates, and the other cities a candidate says they can work in.

  • Work experience

Employer, job title, description, start and end dates, current role flag, contract type, city and country, and duration in months for each role.

  • Education

Degree title and type, school, dates, description and location for each entry, plus the highest education level.

  • Skills

Each skill as a separate value with its type (hard skill, software skill or soft skill), ready to filter on.

  • Languages and more

Spoken languages with their level, certifications, interests, driving licences, current job title and experience level.

The full list of fields, with types and example values, is in the CV Extract documentation. To turn the JSON into your own data model, see how to convert a resume PDF to JSON. New to the topic? Our guide explains what a resume parser is and how resume parsing works.

How it works

Parse a resume in three steps

  1. 01

    Upload a CV

Drop a PDF, Word document, slide deck, text file or image of a resume. No account or email address is needed.

  2. 02

    Wait a few seconds

The file goes to the HireLayer resume parsing API. Most CVs come back in a few seconds; long or scanned documents can take up to a minute.

  3. 03

    Read, copy or download

Review the extracted profile field by field, then switch to the JSON view to copy it or download it as a .json file.

Writing your own CV rather than reading someone else's? The ATS resume checker uses the same parser and tells you which fields were missed and how to fix the file.

When to use the resume parsing API instead

This page runs on the HireLayer resume parsing API. Use the page to look at one CV; use the API when CVs arrive in your own software and need to be parsed without anyone opening them.

Questions

Resume parser FAQ

Is this resume parser really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no trial and no card. You can parse up to 3 resumes every 15 minutes from the same IP address, with files up to 5 MB. The limit is shared with the ATS resume checker and the parser demo.

What does a resume parser do?

A resume parser reads a CV file and turns its free text into named fields: who the candidate is, how to reach them, where they worked and when, what they studied, which skills and languages they list. Recruiting software uses those fields to fill candidate records, search and filter instead of retyping each CV.

Which file formats can I upload?

PDF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PPT, PPTX, ODP, XLS, RTF, TXT, JPG/JPEG, PNG and BMP. A PDF exported from Word or Google Docs usually gives the most reliable result. Scans and photos work, but the text has to be recognised from the image first, which is slower and can introduce errors.

Can it parse CVs in languages other than English?

Yes. Resumes written in 70 languages are supported, including French, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Italian. The field names in the JSON stay the same whatever the language of the CV.

Can I download the result as JSON?

Yes. The JSON view shows the full response returned by the resume parsing API. You can copy it or download it as a .json file to inspect the structure or test an import.

Can I parse many resumes at once?

Not with this page, which handles one CV at a time. To parse resumes in bulk, from an ATS, a job board or a script, use the HireLayer resume parsing API: same output, one HTTPS request per CV, and the free plan includes 50 credits a month.

What happens to the resume I upload?

The file is sent to the HireLayer resume parsing API to produce the result shown on this page. Nothing is emailed or published, and you do not need an account. If you prefer, replace the name, email, phone number and address with placeholders before uploading: the rest of the CV is parsed the same way.
